Download WolfQuest: Amethyst Mountain
An immersive, 3D wildlife simulation game, WolfQuest challenges players to learn about wolf ecology by living the life of a wild wolf in Yellowstone National Park. The single-player game consists of two episodes. In the first episode, Amethyst Mountain, players explore the wilderness, hunt elk, and encounter stranger wolves in a quest to find a mate. In the newly released second episode, Slough Creek, players find a den, establish a territory, raise pups and defend them from predators such as coyotes and grizzly bears. Online multiplayer games let up to five players form a pack to explore and hunt together.
The WolfQuest experience goes beyond the game with an active online community where you can discuss the game with other players, chat with wolf biologists, and share artwork and stories about wolves.

Overview
The Minnesota Zoo and eduweb are partnering to develop WolfQuest, an innovative new project that brings the immersive, compelling drama and action of video games to informal science learning while creating a model for nationwide distribution. Designed for players age nine to adult, WolfQuest will teach wolf behavior and ecology through its exciting gameplay and intense social interactions.

News Articles and Reviews
Star Tribune article and review
WolfQuest’s three major components comprise a powerful informal learning experience:
  • WolfQuest Game: WolfQuest is an immersive, 3D wildlife simulation game that lets players learn about wolf ecology by living the life of a wild wolf in Yellowstone National Park. Players play alone or with up to four friends in on-line multiplayer games. In Episode 1: Amethyst Mountain players explore the wilderness, hunt elk, and encounter stranger wolves in a quest to find a mate. The new release features episode 2: Slough Creek in which players find a den, establish a territory, raise pups and defend them from predators such as coyotes, grizzly bears and other stranger wolves.

Since its launch two years ago, WolfQuest has received a number of awards including a 2009 MUSE Awards from the American Association of Museums and The Editor’s Choice Award by Children’s Technology Review. It was also selected by the National Science Foundation to present at the 2009 Senate Education Technology Showcase in Washington D.C. WolfQuest has been downloaded nearly 400,000 times in over 200 countries. The online community forum currently has more than 110,000 registered users that have posted over 870,000 times.

In 2009, a comprehensive summative evaluation run by the Institute for Learning Innovation showed that player interest in, connection to, and knowledge about wolves increased significantly after playing WolfQuest. Throughout the evaluation, WolfQuest was shown to be highly effective in achieving its goals and providing a rich and rewarding learning experience for the players. The Minnesota Zoo leads a national network of zoos and science education centers that promote WolfQuest through their websites including the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota, Yellowstone National Park, Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Washington, D.C. Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, the Toronto Zoo, the California Wolf Center, the Knoxville Zoo, the Rosamond Gifford Park Zoo in New York, the Phoenix Zoo and the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center in Missouri. See Game Features >

  • WolfQuest Web Site: The WolfQuest game is the focus of a game community Web site where players can learn about the game and download the latest version, as well as post tips and strategies, ask questions of wolf experts, share personal wolf artwork and stories, test their wolf knowledge with online polls and quizzes, compete for prizes, and participate in partner promotions. The Web site also features background information about wolf ecology and conservation and educational materials for classroom use.
  • WolfQuest Network: WolfQuest‘s impact is greatly expanded by a national network of Informal Science Education (ISE) institutions. Each institution publicizes the project to current and expanded audiences in its region.
WolfQuestWolfQuest is made possible through grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) with local support provided by Best Buy Children’s Foundation, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and the ADC Foundation.

Download WolfQuest: Survival of the PackWolfQuest: Survival of the Pack, featuring Episode 2: Slough Creek, is available for free download here on this Web site.
This version, 2.0.2, released on January 27, 2010, has many bugfixes and allows numbers in multiplayer usernames.
Single-Player Game
Live the life of a wild wolf in Yellowstone National Park, learning how to survive in the wild, finding a mate, and raising a family.
In Episode 1: Amethyst Mountain:
  • Create your wolf avatar, selecting male or female, choosing from a range of realistic wolf coats (and customizing the coat with color tints), and configuring its abilities (strength, speed, and stamina).
  • Explore four square kilometers of alpine wilderness on the slopes of Amethyst Mountain in Yellowstone National Park, running across open meadows, through dense fir forests, and along sheer cliffs. (Amethyst Mountain is in the Northern Range of Yellowstone National Park, overlooking the Lamar Valley, where wolves were first reintroduced to the park in 1996. See it in Google Maps!)
  • Hunt elk. Follow scent trails to locate elk herds, then sneak up on the herd, find the weakest one, and begin your attack. Pursue your prey and sap its strength while dodging its counterattacks, to make the kill.
  • Harrass grizzly bears and coyotes who try to eat elk carcasses, or just for the fun of it.
  • Follow scent trails to find stranger wolves. Communicate with them through wolf vocalizations and behaviors.
  • Find a mate and establish a bond.
In Episode 2: Slough Creek:
  • Explore Slough Creek, four more square kilometers of river, meadow and mountains near the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park, east of Mammoth. (See it in Google Maps!)
  • Select a safe den site.
  • Establish and maintain your territory with raised-leg urination and howling.
  • Raise your pups: train them, feed them, and protect them from coyotes, grizzly bears, and other predators.
  • Hunt elk and other animals as opportunities arise.
  • Keep your pups alive!
Multiplayer Game
  • Form a pack with 2-5 players in public or private multiplayer sessions.
  • Explore the worlds of Amethyst Mountain or Slough Creek together, hunting elk and chasing coyotes.
  • Chat with other players with an in-game safe chat system, limited to common English words. (If you see inappropriate behavior in a multiplayer chat, please report it to us.)
  • Work as a team to bring down a powerfull bull elk.

Gray Wolves — viewable in Wolf Woods in the Minnesota Trail.
For the first time in many years, the Zoo will be home to a pair of northern gray wolves, viewed in their native woodland setting from a variety of perspectives, including a rustic log cabin set right in the center of the exhibit.
Image of a wolf: Orion
Orion
Zoo ID number 1.0 11805

This male was born in 19 April 1996 in Green Bay Wisconsin at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. He was housed with his 3 brothers and was the most dominant male in the pack until he was suddenly outed and was transferred to MN Zoo in December 2006. It turned out his loss of dominant status was probably due to some fractured teeth that became infected. Shortly after coming to the MN Zoo he was introduced to female 11791 and was very submissive to her to the point that he would not eat if she was not there. The keepers had to target train them so that they could be close so that he would eat and to keep her from taking his food. Since moving to the new exhibit he has become more assertive and will defend his food and enrichment from the female, but she is still dominant over him. Overall he has a laid back temperament and generally stays in the middle of the exhibit, keeping him viewable to the zoo’s visitors.

Image of a wolf: Waziyata
„Waziyata“ or „Wazi“ for short
Zoo ID number #12253

Waziyata (Waz-e-yata) is the Lakota word for North. She was born on 29 April 2008 at Bear Creek Wildlife Sanctuary in Canada. She was born to a little of seven. Five of her siblings are still together at the Red River Zoo in Fargo, ND and one female was sent Oregon Zoo with our former female „Shania“ for company. Wazi was introduced to our male during the last week of October 2008 and they have been getting along well with no fighting observed between them. The male has taken to laying on the large boulder in the middle of the exhibit, and Wazi is usually close by, often trying to get the male to play with her. Wazi has a laid back temperament and has been doing well on exhibit and working with the zookeepers.

Mexican Gray Wolves — Viewable from the Wolf Gazebo in the Northern Trail
This gazebo is the viewing area for the one-acre exhibit that currently houses four Mexican Gray Wolves.

All of the Mexican gray wolves in captivity are managed as part of the Species Survival Plan. This group makes decisions on which wolves stay or are moved to another facility. All wolves are owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service or SEMARNAT—the two government organizations in the US and Mexico that deal with natural resources and their management.
Image of a wolf: Frisco
Frisco („Free“)
Zoo ID number #10960
Studbook number #833

Born at the Minnesota Zoo on May 19, 2003 in a litter of 7 pups. He is fairly non-descript in his physical markings and has classic Mexican wolf coloration and features. Frisco was the most dominant male in the pack until February 2007, when Tano, a lower ranking male challenged him and came out as the most dominant male. Frisco remains a lower ranking male wolf in the pack.

Image of a wolf: Ulie
Ulie
Zoo ID number #10961
Studbook number #834

Ulie was named for Dr. Ulie Seal, a conservationist who started the Minnesota Zoo and the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group. He was born at the Minnesota Zoo on May 19, 2003 in a litter of 7 pups. He is a very dark faced wolf (almost black) with a „classic“ wolf look in the face/body. Ulie is a middle ranked wolf in the pack, and stays out of any of the more serious dominance interactions that occur in the group. He often spends time near Frisco when in the exhibit or den, and is one of the wolves to gain possession of enrichment items before any of his brothers.

Image of a wolf: Tano
Tano („Glory“ or „Sun“)
Zoo ID number #10962
Studbook number #835

Born at the Minnesota Zoo on May 19, 2003 in a litter of 7 pups. He has a very „gold“ overall body color with a very broad shaped head. He recently challenged Frisco in a dominance interaction in February 2007, and appears to be the most dominant male in the pack. He still bears scars on the left side of his face from this challenge. He is the most fearful of staff and often will run away as soon as we approach the outside gate of the exhibit.

Image of a wolf: Raja
Raja („King“ or „Hope“)
Zoo ID number #11130
Studbook number #899

Born at the Minnesota Zoo on May 13, 2004 in a litter of 8 pups. He has darker features than Frisco but not as dark as Ulie. He can often be confused with either wolf, except when you look at his ears, where they seem to be „larger than life“. He often completely removes himself from any conflict in the pack and is currently the lowest pack member. He is a full sibling to the other three males, just born a year later to the same parents.
